Privacy Policy
Voices in the Static · Effective 6 October 2026
This policy covers the Voices in the Static app and website. It is written to be read. If anything is unclear, write to stonean@gmail.com.
What we collect
- A device identifier. The app creates a random identifier on your device. We keep a one-way scrambled form of it (a hash), the date we first saw it, whether it has the full version, and how many questions it has asked each day. That is how the daily question count works. It is not tied to your name, email address or phone number, and we do not ask for those.
- Your questions. What you type is sent to our server so an answer can be made. For a plain answer it goes no further. We do not keep your questions or the answers once your session ends, and we do not use them for advertising.
- Motion sensors. While the app is open it reads your phone's motion sensors (how the phone is held and moved) and uses them to stir the random noise the answers form in. The readings themselves stay on your phone. Every couple of seconds the app scrambles them into a short fingerprint (a hash) and sends only that; the readings cannot be worked back out of it, and we do not keep it.
- The camera. Sight shows your camera's picture and looks for human shapes in it. All of that happens on your phone: no picture, no video and nothing about what was found is sent to us or to anyone, and nothing is saved. The app tells our server only how many seconds Sight has been open, so the free version's daily minute can be counted.
- The coin. The side you choose and the count of your flips stay on your phone; you can clear the count there. The app tells our server only that a run was begun, so the free version's daily runs can be counted.
- The microphone. Listen records a few seconds of the room and plays it back amplified. All of that happens on your phone: no sound and nothing about what was heard is sent to us or to anyone, and the newest ten recordings are kept in the app's storage on your phone, nowhere else, until you delete them there (each one, or all at once) or remove the app. The app tells our server only that a Listen session was made, so the free version's daily session can be counted.
- Circles. If you open or join a circle, the questions you ask there and the answers are shown to everyone in that circle. A circle shows how many people are in it, not who they are. Anyone with the code can join, so share it only with people you want there.
- Your time zone offset. So that your daily count resets at your own midnight.
- Your internet address (IP). Like any internet service, our servers see the address you connect from. We use it to keep the service running and to limit abuse. It appears in server logs that are kept for about two weeks.
- Purchases. The full version is sold and billed by Google Play. We receive confirmation of the purchase and its order number, not your name, email address, card or bank details.
What we do not collect
No name, email address, contacts, photos, video, audio or precise location. The camera and the microphone are used only on your phone, as described above, and what they pick up is never sent to us; nothing from the camera is kept, and Listen's recordings are kept only on your phone until you delete them. There are no advertisements and no advertising or analytics trackers in the app.
Who else handles your information
- An AI service (Anthropic). For a sentence answer (the full version's, and one free sample), your question and the words that formed in the noise are sent to an AI service, which arranges those words into a sentence. It does not receive your device identifier or IP address from us. The provider may keep what it receives for a limited time under its own policies. Plain answers are not sent to it.
- Hosting and network providers (DigitalOcean, Cloudflare). They run the servers and carry the traffic.
- Google Play. For purchases and for distributing the Android app.
We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with anyone else unless the law requires it.
Keeping and deleting
The scrambled device identifier and its daily counts are kept while the app is in use. Clearing the app's storage, or uninstalling it, removes the identifier from your device, and the record we hold can no longer be connected to you. To have a record deleted, write to stonean@gmail.com.
Children
The app is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date.
